Mission:

To advance the global orthopaedic research agenda through excellence in research, education, collaboration, communication and advocacy

Goal:

To be the world’s leading forum for the dissemination of new musculoskeletal research findings

5 Year Strategic Plan 2011-2016

Goals and Objectives

I. Promote and communicate the vision and mission of the ORS as well as the direction of musculoskeletal research

a. Develop an internal communication plan.
b. Develop an external communication plan
c. Accelerate communication of new musculoskeletal research findings among members, key stakeholders and the public
d. Create and encourage strong international collaborations

II. Continue our long-standing reputation of delivering outstanding scientific programs

a. Ensure that the latest, most innovative and novel musculoskeletal research is being presented at the annual meeting
b. Ensure that all programs are relevant to the membership
c. Provide opportunities for effective networking and exchange of ideas and information
d. Develop and conduct on-going program assessments

III. Ensure the growth and long-term retention of the multidisciplinary, diverse and international ORS membership

a. Develop and regularly conduct member needs assessments
b. Regularly evaluate benefits of membership; communicate value of benefits to the membership
c. Establish quantifiable goals for growth in all categories of membership; review annually
d. Institute membership retention program
e. Identify new constituencies for membership recruitment

IV. Deliver outstanding professional development programs for our members

a. Build a dynamic mentorship program to guide musculoskeletal researchers in their career paths
b. Assist members in developing and increasing skills that will enhance their career success
c. Serve as an information source for professional development programs offered in musculoskeletal research

V. Support the development of clinician scientists

a. Generate the definition of a clinician scientist
b. Establish a network of senior scientist mentors
c. Develop a network of host laboratories for training

VI. Cultivate strong partnerships across the orthopaedic community — promoting orthopaedic research and advocating for increased funding

a. Establish a national Research Advocacy Agenda
b. Establish an international Research Advocacy Agenda

VII. Maintain a strong, focused, and agile infrastructure

a. Regularly review and implement organizational changes in the governance structure to support the mission of the Society
b. Build mechanisms to identify and develop future Society leaders
c. Expand opportunities for members to serve within the Society
d. Grow and sustain strong staff support that is aligned with the volunteer structure and Society mission

VIII. Cultivate new revenue streams

a. Regularly review and identify opportunities for increased revenue, that align with the core values of the Society

IX. Ensure fiscal soundness

a. Adopt an annual balanced budget
b. Ensure that all new programs and services are aligned with the mission and strategic plan
c. Develop assessment criteria for the budget to ensure that it is allocated according to the priorities of the Society
d. Ensure the society is fiscally strong – both in the short- and long-term

X. Evaluate progress of strategic plan
