  • New Investigator Recognition Awards
    Award recipients will be selected upon the quality and presentation of material in the abstract during the podium presentation at the ORS Annual Meeting. Separate submission not required beyond the abstract.

  • ORS Research Section Awards
    Awarded by each ORS Research Section, these awards are presented during the ORS Annual Meeting. Separate submission not required beyond the abstract.

  • ORS/RJOS Young Female Investigator Grant 
    The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) and the ORS Women’s Leadership Forum (WLF) collaborate to promote and support young female investigators in the field of orthopaedic research.

Annual Meeting Awards: Travel Awards

  • ORS/OREF Travel Grants in Orthopaedic Research Translation
    These grants recognize clinician scientists and clinical investigators in the early stages of their career who have played a key or leading role in an original research project in clinical or translational medicine, and who have demonstrated excellence in training and a commitment to orthopaedic research.

  • ORS Early Career Outreach Travel Award
    The purpose of the award is to help offset travel expenses to the ORS Annual Meeting, as participants will need to arrive one day early to volunteer for the ORS Open Door event.

  • ORS Spine Section Travel Fellowship
    This fellowship is designed to advance an ongoing study or establish new collaborations by providing a mechanism to promote exchange of research methodologies and/or development of pilot data to support larger scale funding.

  • ON/ORS Education Grants 
    ORS & ON will provide Education Grants to ten ORS members to contribute to their individual travel expenses/registration fee up to a maximum of USD $500.00 for attending the ORS Annual Meeting. 

Annual Meeting Awards: ORS Partner Grants, Fellowships and Awards

  • Stryker/ORS Women’s Research Fellowship
    This fellowship provides an opportunity for an individual who identifies as a woman or gender non-conforming (non-binary, gender fluid, etc.) ORS member who is a recent PhD in science or engineering to conduct research in the field of orthopaedic technology. 

  • ON/ORS Kick-Starter Grants 
    ON is sponsoring two grants in the amount of $10,000 to support ORS members’ research that focuses on an innovative approach in regenerative orthopaedics or that answers an important open question in that field.

  • ORS/ON Foundation Orthoregeneration Award 
    The ON Foundation and the ORS are collaborating to advance orthopaedic tissue regeneration. 

Annual Meeting Awards: ORS Outstanding Achievement Awards

  • ORS Meniscus Section Impact Award
    The Meniscus Section presents the inaugural “Impact Award” to honor an established meniscus researcher in the ORS who demonstrates impactful meniscus research and impactful collaborations, mentorship, and innovation.

  • Alfred R. Shands, Jr., MD Award
    Selected by the ORS President, this award recipient will have made significant contributions to orthopaedics. 

  • Dr. Peter Roughley Award
    This award will preserve Dr. Roughley’s legacy in training the future generations of scientists by sponsoring a trainee and mentor exchange to enhance a trainee’s knowledge in spine, disc and cartilage biology.

  • ORS Adele L. Boskey, PhD Award 
    The purpose of this award is to recognize a mid-career member of the ORS for outstanding and sustained commitment to mentorship as well as a demonstrated track-record of an upward trajectory and impactful research program.

  • Women’s Leadership Forum Award
    The Women’s Leadership Forum Award recognizes a woman biologist, clinician, or engineer who has made significant contributions to the understanding of the musculoskeletal system and musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.

  • ORS/OREF Distinguished Investigator Award 
    The ORS/OREF Distinguished Investigator Award will honor an individual with a long-standing, productive career in orthopaedic research. 

  • Marshall R. Urist, MD Award
    This award honors an investigator in tissue regeneration research who has a sustained ongoing body of focused research in the area of tissue regeneration as it relates to the musculoskeletal system.

  • Outstanding Achievement in Mentoring Award 
    The ORS Outstanding Achievement in Mentoring Award celebrates the commitment of the outstanding mentors in our community who promote the success of new investigators in the pursuit of independent orthopaedic research careers.

  • ORS ISFR Lifetime Achievement Award 
    This award proudly honors highly accomplished individuals who have throughout their career demonstrated and promoted the highest values of the ORS ISFR.

  • Arthur Steindler, MD Award  
    This award is given every other year to recognize senior scientists, clinicians and educators who have made significant contributions to the understanding of the musculoskeletal system and musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. 

Annual Meeting Awards: ORS Journal Awards

  • JOR Early Career Award
    This award highlights the work of an early-career researcher to enhance the awardee’s professional profile. 

  • JOR Excellence in Basic, Clinical, and Translational Science Awards
    This award celebrates seminal work published in JOR in the Basic, Clinical, and Translational Science categories. A grant of $1000 is presented to each award at the ORS Annual Meeting, selected by the Editors from eligible papers accepted by the Journal of Orthopaedic Research in the prior calendar year.

  • William H. Harris, MD Award
    The Harris Award is given to an individual based on the quality and scientific merit of their accepted paper in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research® on the topic of basic and/or clinical research involving the hip. 

  • JOR Spine Early Career Award
    This award is designed to recognize the ‘rising stars’ of our field and highlight their outstanding work published in the JOR Spine. Each year, awardees will be recognized at the ORS Annual Meeting and ORS Spine Section Meeting.

  • ORS Fellows
    The ORS Fellows Program recognizes individuals who have demonstrated service and leadership, substantial achievement, expert knowledge, and significant contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research and the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). 

Other Awards

  • ORS/Bethel Fellowship Grant  – Submissions Due April 15, 2024
    The ORS and Orland Bethel Family Musculoskeletal Research Center (BMRC) join together to offer a program will that support the generation of critical preliminary data for larger grant applications, leading to breakthrough treatments for musculoskeletal diseases. 

  • Spine Section Diversity Stipend Awards
    The goal of these awards is to increase diversity and equitable access to spine research.

  • Collaborative Exchange Grants 
    This grant provides investigators at any stage of their career an opportunity to visit a research lab for the purpose of collaboration and knowledge exchange. 

  • ORS ISFR Interdisciplinary Academic Exchange Grant
    This grant will fund an ORS ISFR member to visit a research lab for the purpose of collaboration and knowledge exchange in the areas of fracture repair and/or bone regeneration research and to facilitate the exchange of new research methodologies and techniques.
