Purpose
Mission Statement
The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is dedicated to the advancement of orthopaedic research and to the translation of basic and clinical research to clinical practice. The ORS carries out this mission primarily by disseminating knowledge and by promoting the development of basic and clinical scientists. The ORS also advocates for increased resources for research, and increases public awareness of the impact of orthopaedic research.
Vision
The ORS will be recognized within the orthopaedic community as the information and knowledge source of orthopaedic research and the orthopaedic organization that is focused on expanding orthopaedic research through its advocacy and education efforts and the promotion of the development of clinician scientists. The public and various health policy-making entities will identify the ORS as the source of information and knowledge on the current state of orthopaedic research.
Goals and Strategic Directions
1. 0 Advocate increased research funding that will support orthopaedic research.
1.1 Promote the need and value of funding support for NIAMS, OREF and the AAOS.
1.2 Establish a research advocacy agenda for research lobbying on the Federal level.
1.3 Develop strategies and programs that will support research and research funding in academic orthopaedic departments.
1.3 Influence the perspective and view of the importance of continued support of research by the AAOS and other orthopaedic organizations.
1.4 Increase the awareness of the public and the media of the importance and the impact that orthopaedic research has had on the American public.
2.0 Provide educational opportunities and information and knowledge dissemination to support and advance orthopaedic research activities.
2.1 Develop programs that educate interested scientists in the concepts of and how to be successful in orthopaedic research endeavors.
2.2 Use the various member communication vehicles of the ORS disseminate information and knowledge on orthopaedic research to ORS members.
2.3 Develop programs by which the value of research is transmitted and understood by members of the AAOS and other orthopaedic organizations.
2.4 Identify and define the value of the ORS Annual Meeting and develop action plans to maximize such value to the members and to those interested in orthopaedic research.
2.5 Maximize the use of cost effective and cost efficient technology to deliver education and knowledge to members and interested orthopaedic researchers.
3.0 Develop programs that will increase and enhance the awareness of the ORS does and enhance its prestige in the orthopaedic community and with the public.
3.1 Develop a communications plan that will identify the audiences to be reached, the messages to be delivered and the vehicles by which it can be delivered.
3.2 Enhance the image of the ORS as an organization which is at the leading edge of research and technology, and is interested in current and future orthopaedic research issues and initiatives.
3.3 Utilize proven public education techniques to promote the awareness of the ORS.
3.4 Position the ORS to be the recognized bone and joint research society of the Bone and Joint Decade.
4.0 Foster and support unity and collegiality within the diverse orthopaedic research community.
4.1 Maintain and promote a balanced program at the Annual Meeting - promote clinical relevance of all papers.
4.2 Maintain and promote balanced representation on the Board and all other ORS committees.
4.3 Develop new committees as the need arises.
4.4 Communicate with current and new members of the ORS emphasizing the social and collegial functions at the Annual Meeting.
4.5 Enhance regular Board and/or President to member communications vehicles.
5.0 Assure that the ORS will maintain financial stability and growth.
5.1 Develop programs to increase membership.
5.2 Encourage financial donations and further strengthen relationship of the ORS to the OREF and related groups.
5.3 Enlist members to identify and encourage third parties to donate to the ORS.
5.4 Develop sponsorship opportunities for ORS programs and activities.
5.5 Develop new products that could be marketed through the web to medical schools and colleges.
5.6 Develop benchmarks to assure the value of management services being received.
5.7 Increase the number of exhibitors at the Annual Meeting.
5.8 Monitor and assure that ORS investments are being managed in accordance with ORS investment policies.
6.0 Commit to a long extended endeavor to foster the development and increase of clinician-scientists.
6.1 Develop early out reach programs to identify potential and prospective clinical investigators.
6.2 Conduct studies of successful models in place and disseminate as "best practices" case studies that others could adopt.
6.3 Establish fund raising models that will support such an endeavor.
6.4 Set realistic expectations for this endeavor.
