Artificial Intelligence and Software as Medical Devices in Orthopedics: How Are Regulators Keeping Patients Safe?
ORS Industry Alliance Committee and ORS Innovation Committee
Friday, February 2
2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
The purpose of this session is to discuss regulatory needs, pathways and challenges associated with software products and AI/ML algorithms developed to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning of a range of musculoskeletal disorders.
Unlocking Your Mind: A Workshop on Creative Ideation
ORS Industry Alliance Committee
Saturday, February 3
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
A successful brainstorm is too often inhibited by our preconceived notions of what the solution should already be or what constraints exist for each new idea. This workshop will explore the fundamental principles of brainstorming and discuss how to create an environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the key components of a successful brainstorm and then have participants conduct an interactive exercise to practice those key components. The topics will include learning to separate divergent and convergent thinking, striving for quantity over quality, deferring judgment, and the benefit of “wild” ideas. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the creative process and be able to apply the tools learned to future brainstorming sessions.
Essential Soft Skills Workshop: Navigating Personal and Career Growth
ORS Industry Alliance Committee
Sunday, February 4
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
The education and training of engineers, researchers, and scientists focus on technical capabilities as the focal point. This curriculum typically continues as one enters an academic or industry career, as gaining certified qualifications and expertise may be valuable for a given technical skill set. However, this may often leave an individual feeling unprepared when met with challenges outside the technical realm. Navigating a career is challenging, but even more so when there are soft skill gaps. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss what these soft skills are and how one can leverage them. Topics to be discussed will include:(1) How to receive and give better feedback, (2) Understanding that communication is more than speaking, and (3) Negotiation and Advocacy. This session will target early-career through established researchers.
Thinking Outside the Box: Exploring Innovative Solutions to Unmet Clinical Needs in Spine
ORS Industry Alliance Committee, ORS Innovation Committee and Spine Section
Sunday, February 4
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
Spinal diseases present considerable therapeutic hurdles and despite breakthroughs in surgical procedures, implants, and imaging modalities, a large group of patients continue to suffer from chronic pain and impairment following existing treatment. There is an increasing demand for regenerative, non-invasive, or minimally invasive techniques for treating spine problems. There is also a strong need for computational modeling and artificial intelligence-driven pain and degeneration management. In addition, many important topics, such as managing pain, gender-based pathology, and therapy response based on precision remain largely unsolved. This symposium will help in identifying unsolved clinical spine-related problems that require cross-disciplinary expertise and creative collaborations. After the presentations by distinguished speakers from both industry and academia, a brief panel discussion will take place. During the discussion, attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.
Business Innovation Competition
ORS Innovation Committee
Monday, February 5
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
The purpose of the ORS Business Innovation Competition (BIC) program is to provide the resources and opportunity for both early-stage companies, as well as clinicians, researchers, students of all levels with a great idea in the field of musculoskeletal research to participate in a program to validate the market potential of their technology and develop a commercialization plan through expert mentorship and feedback to assist in translating their ideas from bench to market.
Industrial Career Round Table
ORS Industry Alliance Committee
Monday, February 5
2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
This round table session will give participants an opportunity to network with professionals from industry, government, and academia involved in translating technology from benchtop to patients. Each of the speakers will introduce themselves and describe their path to their current role. Each professional will then head networking tables and lead discussions and answer questions on their careers and industry collaborations, as well broad professional development topics. We will have participants change tables every ten minutes so they can talk to a variety of professionals. This session will give participants an opportunity to connect with professionals from large and small institutions as well as their peers, providing insights and connections to help guide career choices. This session will be valuable for both students looking for their first position or experienced professionals interested in making a career change.
